Rights respecting school

Barnfields Primary School is proud to be a Rights Respecting School. Having achieved the Bronze: Rights Committed Rights Respecting Schools Award, we are now working towards the Silver: Rights Aware Award in partnership with UNICEF UK.

This initiative reflects our commitment to foster a safe, inspiring, and positive environment where every child feels valued. At Barnfields, children's rights are taught, practised, respected, protected and promoted by all children and adults in our school community. The Rights Respecting Schools Award is integrated into our daily life, encouraging children to lead fulfilling, healthy lives and become responsible, active members of society.

What does it mean to be a Rights Respecting School?

Being a Rights Respecting School means placing children's rights at the heart of everything we do. Guided by the principles of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC), we are committed to creating a school where children feel valued and respected. The children learn about their rights, putting them into practice every day in PSHE lessons, assemblies, in the classroom and on the playground. The Award focusses not only on what children do, but also, importantly, on the actions of adults (duty bearers).

There are four key areas of impact for children at a Rights Respecting school; wellbeing, participation, relationships and self-esteem.

The difference that a Rights Respecting School makes goes beyond the school gates, making a positive impact on the whole community.

  • Children are healthier and happier
  • Children feel safe
  • Children have better relationships
  • Children become active and involved in school life and the wider world

The Steering Group

The Rights Respecting Steering Group is made up of 1 child per class from KS1 and KS2. The group meet regularly with Miss McCulloch in order to deliver and develop the school action plan.
